Derek came to Congressional during the 2006-2007 school-year as the director of the spring musical, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka Jr. He began substitute teaching in the Little School and then became our full-time Speech and Drama Teacher in 2009. Before he came to Congressional, Derek served as the Associate Director of Education at North Shore Music Theater in Beverly, MA. Outside of school, Derek continues to focus his time on theater as a music director and workshop leader for iTheatrics – the New York City organization that develops the Broadway Junior series of musicals. He also serves as an adjudicator and workshop leader for the annual Junior Theater Festivals in Atlanta, GA and Sacramento, CA.
Derek served as Music Director for the Original Cast Recording of The Phantom Tollbooth (Kennedy Center premiere) and has written educational materials for a variety of Broadway Junior musical titles and School Edition musicals including: Xanadu Jr., Hairspray Jr., Miss Saigon School Edition, Rent School Edition, and West Side Story School Edition. Additionally, he co-wrote the educational guides for the Broadway musicals School of Rock and Something Rotten!.
