Derek came to Congressional during the 2006-2007 school-year as a substitute teacher.  He began directing the school’s spring musical and then became our full-time Speech and Drama Teacher in 2009. Before he came to Congressional, Derek served as the Associate Director of Education at North Shore Music Theater in Beverly, MA.  Outside of school, Derek continues to focus his time on theater as a music director and pianist for American University, The Kennedy Center and iTheatrics – the New York City organization that creates the Broadway Junior series of musicals.  He also serves as an adjudicator and workshop leader for their Annual Junior Theater Festival.

Derek has served as Music Director for the Original Cast Recording of The Phantom Tollbooth (Kennedy Center premiere) and written educational materials for a variety of Broadway Junior musical titles and School Edition musicals including: Xanadu Jr.Hairspray Jr.,Thoroughly Modern Millie School EditionRent School EditionMiss Saigon School EditionAvenue Q School Edition, and Sweeney Todd School Edition.  He also created and led “Focusing on the Music in Musical Theater” for the Kennedy Center’s Professional Development Opportunities for Teachers program.

At home, you can find Derek cooking or spending time with his husband, Tim, and their dachshunds, Beau and Rocco.
