Tavis Laws, Director of Athletics and Physical Education

At Congressional, children explore athletics as enthusiastically as they do academics. We believe that sports are integral to the overall educational experience and that what our student-athletes learn on court and field, as in the classroom, goes deeper than scores and win-loss records. Our athletics program teaches habits and skills—good sportsmanship, decision-making, personal commitment, discipline, physical fitness, leadership, resilience, and teamwork—that serve young people well in all aspects of their lives.

In addition to physical education from preschool through eighth grade, Congressional offers interscholastic athletics beginning in fifth grade. All students are encouraged to participate, regardless of ability, so that all can grow. Rosters are kept small, providing a good player-to-coach ratio and allowing for considerable playing time. Colt teams compete in 13 sports in the Capital Athletic Conference as well as against schools outside the league.

Games are opportunities for students, faculty, staff, parents, and friends to come together and show their school spirit. Children learn what it means to work towards a common goal and to support and be supported by the caring Congressional community.
